Recess Unbound is turning 20 years old!

Vision

Its Recess Unbound's 20th Birthday!  And with it, the global fusion scene's 20th!  Alt-Blues Recess, turned Alt-Recess, turned Recess Unbound has had more influence on the global fusion dance scene than any other series of events.  Justin Riley started Recess Productions in Carbondale, CO, in May of 2027, and has since produced over 220 festivals across a dozen states and 6 countries.  This 20th anniversary event will be filled with the nostalgia of old memories and friends, as well as the scene-defining innovation that has always been the hallmark of Recess Unbound Productions.   We will have DJs and teachers from decades past play and teach "nostalgia" sets and classes, where we get to listen to the music and take classes from our past.  Prepare for a trip down memory lane, or a history lesson, as we both revel in (and cringe) over where we as a community have been, and what we have become.

Unlike the old days, lower-income tickets will sell out on a first-come, first-served basis. Like the old days, Scholarship tickets are available through our online registration form.

Event Schedule

In the know

• You're on our Guest List: Upon registering, you will receive an email confirmation including all of your ticket purchases: Event Ticket, Food, Reserved Campsite, etc.  We will have your name and all of your purchased tickets on our guest list. ​
• Being plugged in by being present at mealtime announcements
• These events run and operate through the fact that we gather and eat together.  At the end of each meal, we will have short announcements to plug everyone into the happenings of the day.  Be present for meals, or prepare to feel a little "out of the loop." 
• Showers:  TBA
• The Event's Hot-Mess WhatsApp thread: Get connected to the Hot Mess thread and post anything and everything (link provided after registration!).  Rideshares pre-event, side-adventures, questions about real things, questions about stupid things, missed connections, it's all there!  
• Scholarship tickets and 24-hour Day Passes: Scholarship and 24-hour day Tickets are available.  Go through the normal online registration to fill out our scholarship application for a discounted ticket, or select your à la carte day tickets and meals.
• Three meals a day will be provided for all registrants who purchase a food ticket during registration ($75). All meals will be gluten-free and have vegan options.  During registration, you will be asked for additional food restrictions, and we will do our best to accommodate you.  We suggest that the more food restrictions you have, the more "backup" personal food you bring. ​
• Volunteerism: We ask that all attendees work at least one volunteer shift during most events; some events require more from attendees.  If you are on a Scholarship ticket, we may ask for a second volunteer shift as needed.  Shifts may include setup, breakdown, kitchen, event registration, sound, building an enchanted ambience for dances, and being a clown playing the violin. All the necessary parts of a dance village. 
• Cups: Bring your own.
• COVID PROTOCOL:  There are currently no COVID-related testing or masking requirements at this event. ​If you are experiencing symptoms of a contagious illness or believe you may be contagious, please stay home and join us another time.   These events feature a mix of indoor and outdoor dance spaces in close quarters, with lots of physical contact.  If you are immunocompromised or otherwise significantly affected by illness, we suggest you take whatever precautions you need to feel comfortable, safe, and healthy in these spaces. This is a crowded, intimate setting.

• Daytime Skill Shares: After Brunch, there is space for community skill-sharing.  Offerings range from sponsored adventures in the area to workshops and classes.  Sign up on the Skillshare board and announce them during breakfast announcements. 
• Refunds: Refunds will be available for a $50 administrative fee up until Thursday, one week before the event. Tickets can be transferred to a different name at no cost.  To transfer a ticket, you only need to arrive at on-site registration with an email sent from the original ticket buyer stating that their ticket has been transferred to the new name.

If you bring someone who has never attended a "Justin Riley event," you’ll receive a $35 referral bonus. Here’s how it works:

• When they register online, they’ll have a space to enter your name as their referrer.
• After the event, you’ll get your $35 back as a ticket refund.
• The only exception? If they’re attending through our Scholarship Ticket program, the bonus doesn’t apply (but still, props to you for bringing more good humans into this space).

​Community Guideline

Recess Unbound events are, by design, aspirational and challenging. We have a high expectation for everyone to be responsible for themselves and the people they care about in the space. If you need support, turn to your friends and the people around you. The event will have a loose structure to help you access support networks and resources. If you think you might have higher needs at this event, we suggest you find an event buddy or anchor person to attend and provide physical, social, and emotional support during the event.  We encourage you to choose an anchor person for yourselves in every community space – it’s always a good idea! Every event will have an accessibility statement on the website description that will detail the physical limitations of the space. If you have specific questions, reach out to Justin Riley. We acknowledge that our events are not accessible to all bodies and abilities.
