For years, this site has served as a hub for coordinating our shared adventures down the Green River. Historically, we’ve used it to facilitate centralized expense-sharing among friends for what has always been a collaborative trip. However, we’ve recently become aware that such coordination could be interpreted as a commercial outfitting operation, requiring licensure that we neither possess nor intend to pursue.

To clarify: Unbound Fusion is not a commercial trip. It never has been. We are not offering outfitting or guiding services, nor are we selling tickets or leading a formal event.

If you’re interested in joining the 2025 trip, please reach out directly to someone who has participated in previous years. They can provide insights into how the trip functions and how to get involved.

in 2025 we are changing the intenary for our trip. This year we will be starting at Mineral Bottoms (where we have taken-out in past years) and we will float, dance the 5 days of the magnificent Stillwater section of The Green River down to the confluence of The Colorado River.

At this point, those wishing to do just the non-technical river portion of the trip will motorboat the 47 miles up the Colorado River and be dropped off in Moab, UT.  The other half of the trip will continue another 5 days down the Colorado River through the world renowned Cataract Canyon.  If you do not know Cataract Canyon, please read the linked description of Cataract Canyon.

This is still a 5 to 10 day, non-commercial, river float trip down Stillwater Canyon and the possible add-on of Cataract Canyon in central Utah's breathtaking canyon country.  It's a trip of a lifetime. It will be difficult.  We will be floating all day, sound system in tow, with thousand-plus-foot sandstone cliffs towering above us. At night we'll camp on sandbars where we'll fold out the dance floor and kitchen, feast, dance, and party until the wee hours of the night in one of the most remote areas of the United States.

If you do not feel courageous, this trip is probably not for you. It's not designed to be easy or comfortable, but rather hedonistic and aspirational. It will inspire us into what we did not know we were capable of becoming as individuals, as a cohesive group, and as a community.  To be clear: this is not a dance festival, this is not Recess. This is a private river trip organized by Justin Riley and with the additional river guides and material support of Recess and other trip captains.

The White Water Section: 5 days down Cataract Canyon

There are only a limited number of spots on the second portion of the trip down Cataract Canyon.  All registrants without their own Class V able whitewater boat will be put on a waiting list that will be approved as space allows.  Participants with their own white-water capable boats will be able to fill their boats with their choosen crew.  If they have more space available, we will draw from the waiting list.  For each additional person a boat captain takes from the waiting list, they will be paid their boat rental fee to go towards their own event costs. If you are a boat captain and want to bring a boat, reach out to Justin directly to talk details.

Stillwater Shared Cost - the frist 5 days

The first 5 days of the Stillwater river trip will be $315, which includes 4 days of  food.  There are additional options to purchase space on gear boats, life jackets, etc. during registration.  A limited number of Scholarship Tickets are available through online checkout.

The cost to be a part of this trip will go towards paying rental and use fees for equipment to Recess and Unbound as well as other boating outfitters, paying gas for their transport to and from California, as well as food, trip toilet rental, and other necessary expenses.

Event Flow

Wednesday
Wednesday is a BIG day.  We arrive at the Mineral Bottoms put-in at 8pm (ish). Everyone has already had a BIGGER than anticipated adventure arriving to the middle-of-nowhere and preparing for 5 days+ of no-service-wilderness-dancing-adventure.  We unload Angel the bus and start to stage for the adventure until Midnight as a group of heroes drive the 6 hours round trip to drop the bus off at the take out.  Wednesday is one of the biggest days of the trip. Be ready for it.

Thursday
Thursday we wake up at 9am, load and pack the boats, with desires to launch at noon. The adrenaline, excitement, sun, and WORK, is high until we finally push off in exacerbated excitement, at which point the chillness begins.  We float 3 hours to our first camp, unload, set up the dance floor and party lights, cook dinner, and dance!

Friday
Layover Day.  We hang at Camp 1 for two nights so that we can recover and drop-in from the big "push" of arriving and launch.  Friday is the day where most people choose to do a big hike up canyon or to the rim on a "High" adventure with a group and then dance all night back at camp.

Saturday and Sunday,
Saturday and Sunday are similar to one another. We are in the flow of the trip. We wake, pack, breakfast, and launch by late morning.   Big river mile days.  Hanging and chilling.  Music. Flotilla dance parties. Floating burgers anyone?  Sunday has a spectacular hike option up and over the Gooseneck.  Arrive at camp mid afternoon, dinner, dance and party until 2 or 3am depending on how tired or energized the group is.

Monday
Monday is the other BIG day of the trip.  We wake early, load the boats to be ferried back to Moab and say goodbye to half of our beloved compatriots.  If you are hading out today you have a beautiful 47 mile motorboat ride up the Colorado River to Moab, UT, where you will arrange to get back to your cars and plan your return back to the world. Expect to get to Moab just before dark.

If you are continuing down Cataract Canyon, we will have a layover day as we wait for the motorboat crew to return with fresh supplies for the next section of the trip along with white-water rescue training and prep for the next 5 days of big water.

In The Know

  • The sun will be hot! and the water cold. You will have ZERO cell service from the moment your car leaves concrete to when you arrive at the launch camp. You'll want a dry bag or two for your personal items. Make sure its a high-quality dry bag if you plan to float your gear.
  • Everyone will be responsible for making sure they have the following for themselves. If you do not have these, you will not be allowed to get on the river with us:
    • -A Type I, II, III or V PFD (Personal Flotation Device/ Life Jacket) readily available for yourself at all times.
    • your own flotation device or planned space for you in someone else's. This entire trip is flat water, meaning there are no rapids on this trip at all. Any flotation device that allows you to not be in the water if you choose will work. If by chance that we have a dam release flood like the first year, we will know a few days before the trip and will make needed adjustments in the adding of more robust watercraft.
    • 3 gallons of personal drinking water.
  • If you want a spot on one of the 4 gear boats, we will ask for you to pay for half of the boat rental fee, and the communal trip fees will pay for the other half. A spot on a gear boat will be $70, and includes a life jacket. You will have this option when you pay.
  • WHAT ELSE TO PACK: sun screen, lots of it! a sun shirt and hat to cover your full arms and legs. the sun will be unescapable while on the water! a sun umbrella is also great to have. water shoes or sandals. camping gear. 3 gallons of drinking water for yourself for the 4 days we are on the water.   The event is supplying cooking and cleaning water for the kitchen, but not personal drinking water.  Filtering water from The Green River is not an option you want to take. Bug spray. dry bags for your personal gear you don't want getting wet. dance shoes for a ridged foam dance floor. drinks, alcohol, and other fun libations. no glass containers! snacks and fun things to share with your new and old friends! your own arranged transport to and from Ruby Ranch. Downloaded maps if you want to go on hikes from camp!
  • If you’ve never been on a river trip, this is a great first-timer trip. Also, please post on the FB event page ask here with questions and concerns.
  • Dogs: well behaved dogs that are good being off-leash with people, children, and other dogs are welcome on this trip.  Owners are fully responsible for the behavior of their dogs. Please email Justin if you plan to bring your furry four legged friend!
  • Food: All food will be provided.  All meals will be gluten free and have vegan options.  During registration you will have a chance to tell us your other dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate.  We suggest that the more food restrictions you have, the more "backup" personal food your bring.  Cuz, why not be the one taking responsibility?
  • Cataract Canyon: If you are continuing down the second section of the trip through Cataract Canyon, you will be assigned a boat and a captain.  Your captain will be in direct contact with about what to bring and how to prepare for your trip.  Additional gear you will need is a whitewater certified helmet, a whitewater certified life jacket, and higher quality dry bags than are necessary on the Stillwater section of the trip.

Community Guideline

Recess Unbound events are by design aspirational and challenging

We have a high expectation for everyone to be responsible for themselves and the people they care about in the space. If you need support, turn to your friends and the people around you.

The event will have a loose structure to help you access support networks and resources.

If you think you might have higher needs at this event, we suggest you find an event buddy or anchor person to attend and provide physical, social and emotional support during the event.

We encourage you to choose an anchor person for yourselves in every community space – it’s always a good idea!

Every event will have an accessibility statement in the website description that will detail the physical limitations of the space. If you have specific questions, reach out to Justin Riley.

We acknowledge that our events are not accessible to all bodies and abilities.

Refund Policy

Refunds will be available for a $75 administrative fee and available up to a week following the event.  An additional $60 purchased food cost will only be refundable up to the Thursday of the week prior to the event.  Tickets can be transferred to a different name at no cost.  To transfer a ticket, you only need to arrive at on-site registration with an email sent from the email address that the ticket was purchased through stating that the their ticket has been transferred to the new name.

Accessibility Statement

FIRST 5 DAYS: STILLWATER SECTION: This trip has a high requirement for self responsibility, self care, and physical ability.  Basic familiarity with camping skills are necessary such as setting-up and striking your personal tent every night.  Requirements include the ability to carry your personal gear up and down sandy banks every morning and evening, or be able to ask or plan for others to support you in the hauling of your gear.  You will have to be able to deal-with and planning-for unescapable sun and wind.  There is zero cell service or internet for the duration of the trip.  No electricity.  No running water.  Toilets on army Amo Cans, and only available when at camp. Electronics can be charged during night-time dance times only.  The ability to roll well with the unexpected and unplanned, even when tired and grumpy.  The ability to take self responsibility for one's well being and actions is essential.

SECOND 5 DAYS: CATARACT CANYON
This section includes the potential for long, unintentional swims in class V rapids and the flipping of boats.  This trip requires the ability to rise to even the most unexpected circumstances and a comfort, or even desire, to confront the unexpected high adventure.
